50 Random Things About Me

Thanks to John via Chris for this one.

Here’s a meme with 50 seemingly random questions that I will answer with my expert writing abilities.

  11. What’s your favorite piece of jewelry? My wedding ring is my favorite (and only) jewelry I wear.

Happy 10,000th Clickaversary to Me

I don’t do this very often, but let me take a moment to toot my own horn. DITH has surpassed the 10,000 visitor mark! The first 10,000 is the most difficult right? Kind of like saving the first $1 million is the most difficult? Well, I wouldn’t know because I’m still about $998,472.15 short. Okay, now if you’ll just allow me to spew some useless facts your way, I’ll let you go about your merry way.

According to www.alexa.com, this is the 6,187,952nd most popular website and reaches about 0.000009% of global Internet users. Yes, I know, very impressive numbers. You definitely have a right to be jealous.

And now (drum roll), the 10 most popular posts of all time.  If you’ve missed any of these, you might want to check them out.

I’ve Got a Job!

Those of you that follow this blog regularly may recall that I found out last fall that I would be losing my job to outsourcing in July. I’ve been looking inside and outside my company since then and had not been successful in finding something that was a good fit.

Well, that has finally changed for the good. I was just offered a position as the IT Administrator for a small manufacturing company. Basically, I’m going to be their one-man IT department. It is going to be a radical change from being in a very specialized position at a large company to a jack of all trades at a small company. However, I’m looking forward to the new challenge, and thankfully they are willing let me work through the learning curve on some of the areas that I’m not as strong in.

Since one blog is not enough, I’m starting a new blog called One Man IT Shop to chronicle my transformation from a Fortune 500 IT foot soldier to the general of a one-man IT army. It’s going to bore the snot out of just about everyone. I put the chances at less than 50% that even one person will be interested. But it’s mostly there for me anyway.

Million Blog March

Thanks John

Casey Kasem says: “Coming in at #1214 on the Million Blog List, it’s the legendary Dad in the Headlights”

Okay, so this is not actually a ranking. It’s a project where someone is trying to find out how long it will take to get 1 million blogs listed. It’s probably just a thinly veiled attempt to generate lots of traffic and pick up ad revenue. Oh well…it’s still kind of fun to be listed. Check it out if you want to be a part of the fun and games.

Get to Know Me Better

Rick tagged me on this meme. Thanks man. Let’s get ‘er done.

The rules are:

1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.
2. Each player answers the questions about themselves.
3. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5-6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.
4. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

1) What was I doing 10 yrs ago?

10 years ago the Older Daughter was 5 and the Younger Daughter was just 5 months old. I remember attending the Older Daughter’s dance recital that year–very cute. We were just settling into our previous house. I also started a custom software development business with a buddy–it didn’t work out.

2) What are 5 things on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):

  1. Post to my blog (check)
  2. Get some laundry done (in progress)
  3. Check on the status of a job application (check–no answer yet…grrr)
  4. Do some more work on our business website (probably not going to happen)
  5. Blog surfing (check)

3) Snacks I enjoy:

  • Cheez-Its
  • soybeans
  • beef jerkey
  • popcorn

4) Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

  • Build a nice new house on our ranch
  • Buy a monster motor home and travel
  • Do charity work

5) Three of my bad habits:

  1. Staying up too late
  2. Procrastinating
  3. Not eating right

6) 5 places I have lived:

  1. Lebanon, Oregon
  2. Ontario, Oregon
  3. Cheney, Washington
  4. Boise, Idaho
  5. Caldwell, Idaho

7) 5 jobs I have had:

  1. Petroleum Transfer Technician (some people call it a Service Station Attendant)
  2. Clerk-Typist
  3. Computer Lab Consultant
  4. Software Engineer
  5. Database Administrator

8 ) 5 peeps I wanna know more about:

  1. Bekki
  2. Jon
  3. Bonnie
  4. Allison
  5. smysore

I’m Back!

No folks, I’m not dead. I was on vacation last week. Then when I got home, my router was DOA. We were too busy catching up on ranch chores Sunday to go pick up a new one. So it was not until last night that I was able to work on getting the new one installed. The box said it would take 3 minutes to install. 2 hours later, I was up and running again.

It really sucks to be offline. I probably thought of something at least hourly (or maybe minutely) that I wanted to look up online, but couldn’t.

Anyway, I’m back. Hopefully you can look forward to something worth reading on a regular basis again. Nah, don’t hold your breath.

Blogger’s Block

I think that it takes several things for a blogger to develop a devoted following. Foremost is probably the ability to write in an intelligent, interesting, and entertaining manner. Creativity is also key. I mean a really (yawn) enjoy those blogs that simply directly copy stuff from other sites, but I think the most interesting bloggers generate their own material and/or provide an interesting new take on something they have come across. Finally, regular posting absolutely key. If I happen to hit a blog and see that they only post once a month, I’m not going to be inclined to return–regardless of how good the material is.

So this is where I’m headed with all this: I’m experiencing a serious case of blogger’s block right now. It’s really similar to writer’s block except that…well ok, it’s exactly like writer’s block. I’ve really had a tough time the last couple of weeks. Fellow bloggers, what do you do to combat such slumps? Can you point me to the Blogger’s Ex-Lax…please? Which aisle is it on?

I came up with a couple ideas that I hope to implement:

  •  I know it’s so 20th century, but I need to carry a small notebook with me everywhere I go. I do come up with good ideas frequently. Unfortunately, I’m not generally in front of a computer or I’m at work. Those great ideas quickly drain out of my brain if I don’t act on them. I need to be able to quickly jot down ideas so that I can work on a post in the evening when I have some time.
  • My “creativity” often happens in bursts. I’ll sometimes come up with a good post and find that the ideas just keep coming. I’ll end with 3 or 4 posts in a single day during these brief moments of creative genius (snickers). What I really should do during these bursts is make 1 post and save off the other 3 (as long as they are not time sensitive) for dry periods such as I’m experiencing now.

Tomorrow we are headed out for a week-long spring break vacation. (Hold on for a moment while I do the Snoopy dance.) I’m hoping that things will happen on this trip to get some creative juices flowing again. Stay tuned.
